Yarn Bases

Floofy Fingering (4ply)
$37 per skein

Super squishy and soft, this is a wonderful choice for all fingering weight projects. This yarn has a matt finish and is a wonderful all round 4ply yarn. A lovely option for baby garments because of its super cosy floof (it’s a technical term).

Yarn composition: Machine washable 21 micron Merino Wool

4ply 3 fold worsted spun yarn

Weight: 100g skeins

Length: 400m per 100g

Needle size: 2.75-3.25mm

Cold hand wash recommended, but this is a machine washable yarn – remember to use a gentle/wool cycle and wool specific detergent.

Sourced from Wild Earth Yarns.

Natural 4ply
$37 per skein

Very similar to Floofy Fingering, but better for the environment as the wool is untreated. This is a wonderful option if you are thinking about your carbon footprint but also like super squishy, soft yarn.

Sultry Singles (Fingering weight/single ply)
$37 per skein

Does single ply even need an introduction? If you haven’t tried this sexy base, you honestly should. It has a beautifully rustic look, but is still super lush and soft. This is my favourite yarn to hold double with a lace weight yarn.

Note: all of these details are also true for my Slinky Singles yarn base, except that the yarn content is 90% superwash merino/10%linen. This base has a beautiful drape and I highly recommend for tees and shawls; a little lighter for warmer months.

Sleek Sock (4ply)
$37 per skein

This is the base I stock for socks, in lieu of a part nylon base (see note below). It can of course be used for any other 4 ply projects as well! Perfect for shawls and other garments too. This yarn has such an incredible gleam that it practically glows, and it is incredibly soft too.

Silky Sock (Fingering Weight/2ply construction)
$50 per sock set (100g full skein plus 20g mini skein)

Officially my favourite sock yarn. I. AM. OBSESSED. This yarn base is sooooo lush. The 2ply construction gives the base a gorgeous appearance, and the addition of silk makes it positively glow. It is so wonderfully shiny and as the name suggests, it is very silky soft. The silk also adds strength to the yarn which is perfect for hard wearing garments like socks, and is my solution so a stronger base without adding nylon into my yarn bases. While this base comes in sock sets, it could also be used in place of any fingering weight yarn in other garments.

80% superwash merino/ 20% silk

Weight: 100g

Needle Size: 2.75-3.5mm

Meterage: 366m per 100g

Are Ewe Kidding Me (Fingering Weight/Single Ply)
$45 per skein

Elegance at it's finest. The drape on this yarn is unbelievable and the shiny lustre is to die for. As this yarn contains mohair it has a wonderful halo after blocking, but with the merino is still wonderfully soft and is not itchy. This yarn does not have a lot of stretch, so is suited to items like shawls. However, there are some specific projects where this special yarn shines, for example, The Cottage Cardigan by Jaq Cieslak that calls for a base like this.

56% superwash merino/44% kid mohair

Meterage: 400m per 100g

Cold gentle hand wash required as this yarn is not superwash treated  - remember to use wool specific detergent. Non machine washable.

Double Knit Dream (8ply/DK)
$37 per skein

This DK is delightful. It presents as a non-superwash, soft and fuzzy around the edges, but also so soft and squishy, being the ultimate comfort yarn. But being a superwash it holds the colours and speckles crisply rather than like the watercolour look of non-superwash.

Lux Lace (2ply lace weight)
$60 per skein

Holy Mackerel! Well I’ll be damned if this isn’t the softest yarn I have ever laid my child-like hands on! This lace weight yarn is a divine blend of alpaca, cashmere, and silk. It has incredible drape and is a good choice if you are not a fan of the fluff factor of mohair and suri. Perfect for lace projects or to hold double with other yarns.

Whimsical Worsted
$43 per skein (skeins are 115g, rather than 100g).

This yarn is a light worsted weight. Heavier than my other DK bases, but definitely lighter than an aran weight yarn. It has a stunning springy twist that gives the yarn a really luxurious sheen and also catches the dye in a very appealing way. The colours layer beautifully and the speckles are crisp and clear. If you need a heavier worsted/aran weight, hold double with a lace weight option for a wonderfully whimsical fabric.

100% extra fine merino

Superwash

A note on nylon:
While many sock knitters like a base with part nylon, you will not find that here. I am sorry if this is disappointing, however, we made a decision as a family years ago to only buy clothing made from natural fibres. We have made this decision as one of the many steps we have taken to reduce our footprint on this precious earth. It only made sense to me to extend this philosophy to my business. Therefore I cannot in good conscience offer any bases with plastic in them. Luckily for you crafters, there is lots of absolutely amazing indie dyers in New Zealand and I am sure you will be able to find a colourway you love with one of them if you need a base I cannot offer.

A note on mulesing:
Currently all bases are from local supply chain. The practice of mulesing is illegal in New Zealand, therefore all yarn bases are mulesing free. Animal welfare is of upmost important to me, therefore any bases that are imported in future will be thoroughly investigated to ensure that they are from sources that treat animals well and are mulesing free.
